A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ENNIS HERITAGE SOCIETY
The Ennis Heritage Society was founded in 1981 by motivated citizens who had recently attended a seminar sponsored by the Texas Historical Commission concerning establishing non-profit historical organizations. That Spring, the first organizational meeting of the Ennis Heritage Society was held at the Atwood residence. Fifty-six interested citizens attended the meeting. By the third organizational meeting, held at the William Payne (Captain Moore) residence, a constitution, slate of officers, and a set of by-laws were presented to prospective membership. Upon their unanimous approval, Mr. Al Scoggins filed for incorporation as a non-profit organization with the state of Texas.
Through its volunteers and resources, the Society has led many programs and projects of continuing significance to Ennis and citizens of eastern Ellis County.
